Past Forward
Past Forward is the exhibition held in Venice in conjunction with Venice Design Biennal and the Venice Biennale 2021
Levitas Table, and other artefacts of contemporary Venetian design, have curiously slipped into the midst of ancient sculpture at the Archaeological Museum of Venice, in St Mark’s Square. The double-blown glass Levitas lamp has found an affinity between ancient Greek and Roman sculptures beyond its Latin name LEVITAS. Although the contemporary lightness contrasts the Gravitas of the marbles, the lamp's light casts an ecstatic gaze on the ancient artefacts and reflects the simplicity and serenity of the forms. The legacy of the ancient culture here survives as background noise in the contemporary forms and reverberates in the light lamp without a nostalgic gaze at the past. Like a message left in a bottle long ago, the classical legacy is re-read with new eyes, never satiated with knowledge of the past, but at the same time open to new horizons of meaning. Levitas is immersed in a present steeped in distant memories but looking towards a future already pregnant.
